Week 50: Day 3 - 16 December 2020

  • morning run = 6.04 miles; time = 1:33:02; average pace @ 15:24
  • walked dogs = 2.6 miles total
So I've been looking back at my previous blog posts. I haven't been very good at keeping track of the week? Last week was supposed to have been week 49, but I kept insisting that it was week 48 which meant that there would be four more weeks left for the year if I had used "week 49" for this week. Three weeks left is what is left of the year.

Anyway, I'm on four-ish hours of sleep because I couldn't fall back to sleep after going to the bathroom at 12:30am midnight. I thought I could get away with extra sleep, but it backfired. I'm damned if I do and I'm damned if I don't. I also thought that I could do a lot of nothing (no exercise except walk my dogs) for ther rest of the week until my manager reminded everyone yesterday to bring food for the potluck (that was today). I have to burn off the 5,000 calories that I consumed from the potluck.

Week 48: Day 7 - 13 December 2020

  • morning run = 5.07 miles; time = 1:16:43; average pace @ 15:08
    • warmup ride on rollers = 2 miles; time = 9:35; average speed @ 12.5mph
  • walked dogs = 2.6 miles total
  • morning solo ride = 22.87 miles; time = 1:40:39; average speed @ 13.6mph
Running:
Total Weekly Mileage: 16.51
Total Monthly Mileage: 35.93
Total Yearly Mileage: 791.71
Total Shoe Mileage: 292.89

I really debated whether I actually wanted to do an indoor ride on rollers or go out for an outdoor ride. While it was mostly calm during my run, I would sometimes randomly get a gust of wind or two. Perhaps it was just more calmer at 6am and when I finally got on my bike at 10:30am, the wind decided to pick up. I had a lot of headwinds. I don't like winds at all except tailwind (wind on my back).

Week 48: Day 6 - 12 December 2020

  • indoor ride on rollers = 7.2 miles; time = 28:12; average speed @ 15.3mph
  • walked dogs = 2.5 miles total
Today is my birthday, so I didn't do much. Tomorrow, I will do a run and a bike ride.

Week 48: Day 5 - 11 December 2020

  • morning run = 4.55 miles; time = 1:07:24; average pace @ 14:48
    • pre-run warmup on rollers = 3 miles; time = 12:43; average speed @ 14.2mph
  • walked dogs = 2.7 miles total

Wednesday, December 9, 2020

Week 48: Day 3 - 09 December 2020

  • morning run = 3.83 miles; time = 1:00:32; average pace @ 15:53
  • walked dogs = 2.7 miles total
I need to start getting into the habit of doing a 10-15 minute warmup before my runs. My ankles and knees would feel less stiff, and I would probably stop dragging my feet.

Tuesday, December 8, 2020

Week 48: Day 2 - 08 December 2020

  • walked dogs = 2.6 miles total
  • indoor ride on rollers (evening) = 6 miles; time = 25:21; average speed @ 14.2mph
It's been awhile since I did a ride on my rollers. I've moed my rollers to a different part of the house. It seemed to help "quiet" down the noise level from my rollers, but not by much. It's tolerable I'm convinced that my rollers don't like the current tires that I have on my bike. It didn't use to be as noisy it is/was.

Week 48: Day 1 - 07 December 2020

  • easy, recovery run = 3.06 miles; time = 47:38; average pace @ 15:35
  • walked dogs = 2.6 miles total
Unsurprisingly, feeling a little stiff, but less than I expected and not sore after doing a ride with 4,400 feet in total elevation. It used to be that I would feel pretty sore and want to cry from the pain for two days after a challenging ride with lots of climbing. It's a sign that I'm getting stronger/better?

Sunday, December 6, 2020

Week 47: Day 7 - 06 December 2020

  • morning solo ride = 41.03 miles; time = 4:06:03; average speed @ 10mph
  • walked dogs = 2.6 miles total
Running:
Total Weekly Mileage: 19.42
Total Monthly Mileage: 19.42

My average speed for my bike rides are usually 12mph or better. In my defense for the 10mph, I went up a mountain road called "Mt. Baldy Road". I normally ride up "Glendora Mountain Road" (GMR for short as the local residents in the area and us cyclists like to call it) which is another mountain road, but much easier than Mt. Baldy Road. Glendora Mountain Road and Glendora Ridge Road (GRR for short that connects between Mt. Baldy Road and GMR) were closed to cars, but opened to pedestrians and bikes) this weekend due to extreme fire warnings. So I went up Mt Baldy Road to GRR to GMR. GMR is a very windy road with lots of blind turns. Today was the first time out of the many rides that I've been on GMR that I was less scared of the blind turns coming down GMR. In the past, I wouldn't ride faster than 20mph. While 25mph (and sometimes 30mph) were my average speed going down and not really that much faster, but some improvements is better than none.

Week 47: Day 6 - 05 December 2020

  • morning run = 6.22 miles; time = 1:28:34; average pace @ 14:15
  • walked dogs = 2.5 miles total
So I'm testing something out. I used to have an insole with custom molding (it would mold according to how the arches would be in your feet) for my left bike shoe. I still have this insole for my right shoe, but my left bike shoe now has a pre-molded insole for feet with high arches. The arch in my left foot is slightly higher than normal, but this pre-molded insole gave more support for my left foot that I no longer have pain in my foot when I ride. The insole with the custom molding has been put in my left running shoe. The last time that I did a six mile run (a few weeks ago), my foot felt fine during the run, but was in a lot of pain after the run. It was a good thing that I didn't have to work after the run that day. My foot was a lot better today with the insole in my shoe. I also bought an $11 pair of insoles with pre-molded insoles for my shoes that I wear to work (I was going to wear those in my running shoes, but because they were $11, I worry that they would wear out very quickly from all the impact during runs. If I don't have any arch support for my "work" shoes and I'm standing for two or more hours, my left foot felt like it was on fire. "Work" is in quotes because the shoes that I wear for work are retired running shoes. My foot pain for standing long hours at work started right before I got the pre-molded insoles for my bike shoes. The running foot pain started right after I got the pre-molded insoles for my bike shoes. If it's not one thing, it's another thing. Everything is okay now that I have some sort of arch support for work and running.

I was hopeful and not hopeful at the same time that my back would feel a little better this morning. My back was still a little sore, but did feel a lot better running this morning than yesterday. I'm telling myself to use tomorrow as a rest day...or ride my bike on rollers.

Saturday, November 28, 2020

Week 46: Day 6 - 28 November 2020

  • morning run = 3.47 miles; time = 54:24; average pace @ 15:41
  • walked dogs = 2.7 miles total
Sciatic pain threw my back out on Wednesday afternoon. I couldn't bend or turn at the waist for a day and a half. My back is a little sore now, but mostly okay. Riding a bike is a non-impact sport, so my back was fine yesterday, but running didn't feel okay. It wasn't painful, but it didn't feel okay. I was considering doing a run tomorrow, but I don't think my back would like that idea.

Week 46: Day 5 - 27 November 2020

  • morning ride = 30.6 miles; time = 2:38:00; average speed @ 11.6mph
  • walked dogs = 2.7 miles total
Well, what an "interesting" week. I did a run and walked my dogs on Monday. I didn't update and I didn't do anything on Tuesday, and Wednesday because I had a Covid scare at work. I'm covid-negative, fortunately, but unfortunately for two of my co-workers who are covid-positive. Speedy recovery for them so they can come back to work soon. Then my back went out from sciatic pain, so I didn't do anything yesterday.

Carbon Canyon Road has finally reopened to everyone after firefighters worked really hard to put out the Blue Ridge fire. (Carbon Canyon Road was only available to firefighters and for the people who needed to evacuate...there are a lot of homes on Carbon Canyon and neighboring residential streets that rely on Carbon Canyon).

  • walked dogs = 2.5 miles total
  • morning ride = 22.65 miles; time 1:34:48; average speed @ 14.3mph
I did a ride on a route this morning that I had done many times before, but not in awhile. My average speed was around 12 point something mph during the last few times. I think the last time that I did this ride was last year? All these hilly rides that I've been doing during quarantine/pandemic has made me faster/stronger.

Week 46: Day 2 - 17 November 2020

  • indoor ride on rollers = 2.4 miles; time = 9:09; average speed @ 15.7mph
  • walked dogs = 2.7 miles total
I don't know why the noise level on my rollers is unusually loud. I'm starting to think that my rollers don't like the new tires that I recently put on my bike. My rollers weren't noisy with the old tires. So I don't know how to get my rollers to like the new tires (give me time and I'll figure it out eventually). I was distracted and frustrated with the noise level that my bike (luckily, only the front tire) fell off. I didn't bother trying to get back and continuing. I learned that I shouldn't or can't keep riding on rollers when I'm frustrated. The last time that I kept going with anger and frustration, I completely fell off. My right ankle was a little sore, but it didn't last long. I had a bruise on my right arm and my right wrist was sore for awhile.

  • morning ride = 82.9 miles; time = 5:25:40; average speed @ 15.2 mph

I haven't done a ride with a lot of climbing (hills) yet, but my left foot that has been giving me problems for a long time has finally been solved...at least for long rides. My left foot didn't have any issues and definitely no discomfort today during my 82.9 mile ride.

    • warm up on rollers = 2 miles; time = 9:46; average speed @ 12.3mph
  • walked dogs = 2.7 miles total
We had two days of cold weather two weeks ago. I finally got to wear my gloves during my run. I took them off after one mile because my hands got hot and sweaty. Then I put them back on for the last 1-1/2 miles because my hands started to hurt from being cold. I think I should set up my rollers and do warmups or "indoor" rides outdoors when it's cold. I'm not sure if it is a good idea to do a warm up inside the house and then go for a run outside. I get really hot when riding on rollers indoors and then run outside when it's really cold. It's probably easier for me to adjust to the extreme temperature change.

I had originally planned to do my own ride today, but I saw the weather forecast that called for 12-15mph winds. I decided that it would be better if I did a ride with my friends because I would feel less angry. How can I get mad at the weather when I'm with people who are just happy to ride and be with good company?? Second group ride since Covid/pandemic started. I really miss riding with my friends.

Saturday, November 7, 2020

Week 44: Day 6 - 07 November 2020

  • morning run = 5.41 miles; time = 1:15:37; average pace @  13:59
  • indoor ride = 4 miles; time = 17:22; average speed @ 13.8mph
  • walked dogs = 2.6 miles total
I had originally planned to do an 80 mile ride with a friend today, but it rained this morning. While it did rain, why did we only get rain for two hours? Why not more??? So I went for a run instead. I was starting to think that the weather forecast was wrong because it was partly cloudy with no rain for a long time during my run until it finally started to rain lightly and then it started pouring at the end of my run.

Last weekend, I moved my mat and rollers a little bit farther away from the wall because I needed to learn not to rely so much on the wall. I saw online to use your core/hips to correct yourself when you were about to fall off your rollers. So after I moved my mat and rollers, the mat looked flat, but probably really wasn't which caused my rollers to be noisier/louder than usual when I did a ride on rollers a couple days ago. It's less noisy/loud now that I've fixed my mat.

My rollers were so noisy this morning. The last time that I did a ride on my rollers and it was noisy, my back tire was leaking/losing air. I couldn't handle the noise anymore and didn't do my usual 10-11 miles. I think my rollers don't like the new tires that I put on my bike....or there is something wrong with my rollers. Not that I know what is wrong with my rollers if there is something wrong.

You know you're having a good day doing your own ride when you get to see your friends doing similar rides...during your ride. When I did this same ride two-ish months ago, I indirectly joined a small group of three guys who let me ride their wheel and draft (I was going to a follow-up appointment with my bike fit guy at that time). I had similar riding abilities as them so I was able to keep up with them. I found them today and this time they had three more guys with them, but I couldn't keep up with them on certain sections of the ride because of the headwinds. Now I know where and when they meet up if I ever choose to do an 80-mile ride with them that they do every Sunday.

So today, I had another follow-up appointment with my bike fit guy and I hope this is the last one. I think we've finally found a solution to the pain in my left foot. Today was the first long, flat ride where I didn't get any pain in my foot...some discomfort, yes, but no pain to the point that I had to stop and massage my foot. Now the real test is doing a ride with 3,000+ feet in total elevation (I have the most issues with this type of ride).

  • morning run = 5.72 miles; time = 1:27:34; average pace @ 15:19
  • walked dogs = 2.6 miles total
I was going to learn how to get on and off my rollers by taking it out to an empty parking lot. I got to the parking lot with everything and then I chickened out. I need more time? I think I will need to practice a bit more by moving the rollers a little farther away from the wall when I'm riding on them at home. Most of the time, I can hold my balance and don't touch the wall, but occasionally will touch the wall. I have to learn not to rely so much on the wall and sticking close to it.

I've been on "vacation" from work all week and hadn't done much because there wasn't any work to do. At least, I still have a job and I got paid for the week even though I wasn't there (showed up to clock in and then left after 30 minutes...or five minutes). I didn't feel like doing a ride, but I wanted to get in a few miles for an outdoor ride. Next week, we go back to work and actually have work to do?

  • morning indoor ride - roller training = 10 miles; time = 36:04; average speed @ 16.6mph
  • walked dogs = 2.7 miles total
On Monday, I inflated my tire on my bike and did a ride on my rollers. It was fine. I did a ride on my rollers yesterday and it was fine. I did a ride on my rollers this morning and as soon as I was done, I heard a loud hissing sound coming from my back tire. There had already been some cuts from getting flats in both of my tires while doing outdoor rides. Even though I inflated my tires to the minimum PSI (there is a minimum to max range on the tires, but I only inflate to the minimum because the tires feel good at the minimum and I fear getting a blowout from overinflating even by a little too much which can be dangerous). I guess between the air pressure and my weight, the cut in the back tire couldn't take it anymore. I also guess it was a good thing that I was still home (doing a ride on rollers) and the tire held up long enough for me to finish my ride (however, I did notice that annoying noise while riding on rollers, but I thought that there was something else wrong being with the rollers...but now I know). This hasn't happened to my front tire yet, although it also has cuts (from metal debris and glass from the road). I went to the local bike shop to get two new tires and a new tube. The irony is that the tube that was in the tire while it was leaking air and making a loud hissing sound...I took it out and inflated air in it. I tried to squeeze the air by hand and very forcibly too, but I didn't hear any air coming. I'm so confused? It's okay. I got a new tube and new tires anyway.

Sometimes I wished I had a treadmill. The air was so smokey this morning as there was (still is) a fire locally, about 15 miles from my home. The air bothered my eyes, nose (a little runny), and throat/lungs (coughed a little). Carbon Canyon Road to which I ride on at least once every month had been closed for the fire department and evacuees (there are several homes on the street and the fire is on the other side of a hill that can potentially threaten the homes on Carbon Canyon). I was originally planning on doing a ride there on Saturday because I wanted to take a picture of the skeleton with its many oufits, but I'm not hopeful that it will reopen. I will just have to listen to the news for updates and hope that the firefighters are diligent in fighting the fire without issues.

I can now say that Fall has finally arrived! My hands were frozen stiff this morning from the run. I will still wear shorts and a t-shirt, no matter how cold it is, but I think I need to start wearing gloves. I love cold weather, but I don't like frozen cold hands.

  • late morning run = 2.72 miles; time = 38:42; average pace @ 14:15
I did an indoor ride on my rollers very early this morning. I wished I had done a run first thing this morning instead. On a very extreme rare occasion, I went to work and was sent home early (everyone left 30 minutes after getting there). I AM NOT unemployed and I CANNOT collect unemployment because I'm still employed full time with the same company. I still have to show up for work tomorrow. We did not get laid off. We just didn't have any work to do and we still got paid for the eight hours today even though we were literally only there for 30 minutes. I went for a very short run after I got home from work. Usually, I have the most motivation to run before 7AM, but I wanted to get in a few miles...something is better than nothing. I felt like dying because anything over 50F degrees felt too warm for me. It didn't help that it was super windy and dirt was blowing everywhere.

I had been doing rides on rollers since I got them in April. Today was the first time that my hands didn't get really numb and feel pain. I haven't learned how to ride with one hand without freaking out in a panic. If I learned how to let go for a minute or longer, it could relieve any numbness or pain in my hands when I ride on rollers. My bike fit guy said that getting a bike fit wouldn't help make my hands feel more comfortable riding on rollers...a bike fit is meant for outdoor rides (road, gravel, or mountain trails). I've been able to ride on my rollers with the wall on one side and nothing on the other side comfortably for a few months now. Perhaps, I should go back to having a side barrier on the other side so I could learn how to ride with one hand.

Week 42: Day 7 - 25 October 2020

  • morning solo ride = 28.55 miles; time = 2:12:01; average speed @ 13mph
  • walked dogs = 2.7 miles total
Running:
Total Weekly Mileage: 14.02
Total Monthly Mileage: 54.11
Total Yearly Mileage: 676.44
Total Shoe Mileage: 177.62

Cycling:
Total Weekly Mileage: 91.27
Total Monthly Mileage: 351.76
Total Yearly Mileage: 2674.33
Total Bike Mileage: 2036.43

This is going to be very long. Thanks for reading to the end if you were able to. Sorry for making this so long if you didn't have the attention span.

In 2018, I did the "Finish The Ride" 35-mile route which was in May of that year. It was a small event as there weren't that many people for all the combined rides (there was a 12-mile ride for families, 20-mile ride, and 50-mile ride that year as well as a 5k, 10k and half marathon for the people who preferred to run/walk). The route markers for each distance were confusing and I didn't have the course map on paper to follow. Since there weren't that many people for all the combined rides and everyone was spread out, it was hard to follow anyone from the same distance. I ended up doing 20 miles even though I paid for the 35-mile ride.

I signed up for the "Finish The Ride" 35-mile route at the end of last October. At that time, I was asking myself why I signed up for the Firecracker 40-mile ride (which was in February this year) and I was questioning my riding ability on anything longer than 35 miles. I ended up doing a 60-mile ride with the Pyscho-Lists group in November and then again in January. I had a ton of fun doing the Firecracker 40-mile ride that I sent an email to the Finish The Ride event people, requesting to "upgrade" my ride from 35 miles (2,300 feet in total elevation) to 50 miles (3,400 feet in total elevation) to which they gladly allowed me to. The event was supposed to have been in April, but the pandemic hit and Covid had other plans. The event was rescheduled to 20.September, but that was canceled. I think they are still working on a new date for the Spring as I haven't heard anything about it yet.

Most people don't know this about me, but I wear prescription eyeglasses when I drive. I only really wear it when I'm going somewhere new because I can't read street signs very well without glasses. When I'm not driving, I don't/can't wear them because they hurt my eyes and give me headaches (I can only wear prescription eyeglasses when I'm driving). So in general, I'm not very adventurous when I'm riding solo because I'm always afraid of missing a left turn and getting lost. Usually, when I ride with a group, I just follow the group and don't bother learning the route. However, I'm getting bored of doing rides closer to home and needed a change of scenery, so I have to get over this fear of getting lost. On the other hand, I wanted to get myself familiar with the course/route, so I would have an idea where I was going by event day. So I attempted the ride today. The ride went through Griffith Park and Elysian Park. I had the course sent to my Garmin device so it could help me along, but it was a little confusing...it told me to make a left turn and ride across the grass (my bike isn't made to ride on grass)? There was a few times where I was questioning Garmin's direction. I didn't get lost per se, but I did miss a few left turns (but no big deal) even though I had the route/map/directions on paper because I think I was supposed to have done an extra ten miles just through Griffith Park. I think I had a hard time reading the paper because it was awkwardly placed on my bike. Then I took the Los Angeles River bike path to Elysian Park. The bike path was open to bikes and pedestrians, but only for a short time. I never made it to Elysian Park because the bike path was closed for "road work" and was completely blocked off. There was access to the streets from the bike path, but I didn't know the area at all to take the streets to Elysian Park. So I just turned around and went back to my car. From the looks of it, the bike path may be closed to bikes and pedestrians for awhile. Maybe I will try this ride again in January??

Week 42: Day 6 - 24 October 2020

  • morning run = 5.55 miles; time = 1:20:37; average pace @ 14:32
    • warmup on rollers = 3 miles; time = 13:59; average speed @ 12.9mph
  • morning (outdoor) ride = 30.72 miles; time = 2:08:34; average speed @ 14.3mph
  • walked dogs = 2.6 miles total
The weather has finally cooled down so I can sleep in a little bit and do a run a little bit later in the morning and for me to do an outdoor ride today. Tomorrow will be a little bit cooler, and I plan to do another ride.

My finger still feels a tiny weird, but I can fully close my hand to make a fist now.

  •  morning run = 4.24 miles; time = 1:05:54; average pace @ 15:33
    • warmup on rollers = 3 miles; time = 13:20; average pace @ 13.5mph
  • walked dogs = 2.5 miles total

Week 42: Day 2 -20 October 2020

  •  morning easy, recovery run = 3.3 miles; time = 54:03; average pace @ 16:23
    • warmup on rollers = 2 miles; time = 9:43; average speed @ 12.4mph

My finger still hurts a little, but better than last week. Still somewhat sore from Sunday's ride, but not as bad as expected.

Monday, October 19, 2020

Week 42: Day 1 - 19 October 2020

  • morning easy, recovery ride = 10 miles; time = 42:57; average speed @ 14mph

Sunday, October 18, 2020

Week 41: Day 7 - 18 October 2020

  • morning solo ride = 47:44; time - 4:00:58; average speed @ 11.8mph
  • walked dogs = 2.7 miles total
Running:
Total Weekly Mileage: 19.96

Cycling:
Total Weekly Mileage: 78.06
Total Monthly Mileage: 260.49
Total Yearly Mileage: 2583.06
Total Bike Mileage: 1945.16

My finger is still slightly swollen, but it feels better. I can make a fist as long as I close my hand slowly. Tomorrow will be a different day...we'll see how my finger does with work.

Saturday, October 17, 2020

Week 41: Day 6 - 17 October 2020

  •  morning run = 6.7 miles; time = 1:39:28; average pace @ 14:50
    • warmup = 3 miles; time = 13:39; average speed @ 13mph
  • walked dogs = 2.6 miles total
After tripping from my run yesterday, I went to work. I think I did too much because my hand was hurting a lot at work and it looks worse than yesterday. It doesn't hurt unless I'm doing something with it, but it's more swollen and bruised. I can close my hand and make a fist except for the one finger.

Friday, October 16, 2020

Week 41: Day 5 - 16 October 2020

  •  morning run = 5.07 miles; time = 1:16:24; average pace @ 15:05
    • warmup on rollers = 3 miles; time = 12:49; average speed @ 14.1mph
  • walked dogs = 2.6 miles total
One of my "talents" is tripping on uneven sidewalk. It didn't help that I was dragging my feet and I was daydreaming. I must stop being lazy and learn to pick up my feet. Strangely, I had my phone in my hand and it didn't fly out of my hand. On the other hand (excuse the pun), I landed wrong on my other hand. I don't pay attention to how my hands are when I throw my hands in front to catch my fall, although I usually scrap my palms. Instead of my palm hitting the ground, I stubbed two of my fingers. I scrapped my knee also, but it didn't hurt as much as my fingers. One finger is okay, but the other is bruised and swollen. At least it is not broken because I could still move it.

Week 41: Day 4 - 15 October 2020

  • morning indoor ride - roller training = 11 miles; time = 37:51; average speed @ 17.4mph
  • walked dogs = 2.6 miles total

Wednesday, October 14, 2020

Week 41: Day 3 - 14 October 2020

  •  morning run = 5.14 miles; time = 1:15:40; average pace @ 14:44
    • warmup on rollers = 3 miles; time = 12:26; average speed @ 14.5mph
  • walked dogs = 2.7 miles total

Unsurprisingly, still feeling  little sore, but not as much as I expected.

Monday, October 12, 2020

Week 41: Day 1 - 12 October 2020

  • easy, recovery ride (morning) = 8.62 miles; time = 33:22: average speed @ 15.5mph
  • walked dogs = 2.6 miles total
Almost made it to ten miles for my easy recovery ride on rollers. My front tire fell off and I didn't bother getting back on and finishing the rest of the ride. I was a little worried that I would get frustrated even though it was 1.4 miles left. I'm also suspiciously not sore. I'm either getting used to doing long flat rides or because I've finally figured out this whole post-ride protein thing. I'll find out how sore I really am tomorrow morning when I do a short easy run. Running is harder than riding a bike.

Week 40: Day 7 - 11 October 2020

  • morning ride = 71.12 miles; time = 4:33:56; average speed @ 15.6mph
  • walked dogs = 2.6 miles total
Running:
Total Weekly Mileage: 10.78
Total Monthly Mileage: 20.13
Total Yearly Mileage: 642.42
Total Shoe Mileage: 143.64

Cycling:
Total Weekly Mileage: 113.7
Total Monthly Mileage: 182.43
Total Yearly Mileage: 2505
Total Bike Mileage: 1867.1

I'm using strava info for bike mileage and total yearly cyling mileage until I recalculate the mileage again.

Anyway, I had a follow-up with my bike fit guy this morning because I'm having issues with my left foot. Since my bike needed to come with me, I rode in starting from the Yorba Linda Regional Park. He will be ordering special insoles for my bike shoes that are good for high arches (my right foot has a normal arch while my left foot has a slightly higher than normal arch). I feel that I need something better for the arch in my left foot which is why he is ordering these special insoles just for my left foot. Usually, my left foot will start to hurt after 20-30 miles on rides that has a lot of hills/climbing or 40-45 miles on flatter rides. My left foot last the entire ride until the last mile at the end. I guess this is a good start. Some improvements is better than no improvements?

Week 40: Day 6 - 10 October 2020

  •  morning group ride = 27.58 miles; time = 1:56:41: average speed @ 14.2mph
  • walked dogs = 2.7 miles total
I did one bike ride with one other person. I did the first group (three or more people) ride today since this whole global pandemic started. I miss riding with my friends. Six or seven months and a million solo rides can get lonely and boring. I was also slowly starting to struggle to find the motivation to ride. I also had to force myself to do this ride because it was shorter (27.6 miles) and flater (1,400 feet in total elevation) compared to all of my solo rides that had been much tougher and my legs needed a break....my solo rides ranged from 40-80 miles, from 3000+ feet in total elevation for 40-50 miles or under 2000 feet in elevation for longer rides. Now that I did a group ride, I think I'm good on solo rides for awhile.

Week 40: Day 1 - 05 October 2020

  • easy recovery ride on rollers = 5 miles; time = 22:48; average speed @ 13.2mph
  • walked dogs = 2.6 miles total
I give up trying to figure out my cycling mileage. What I have on my blog is still 100 miles off from Garmin. It also doesn't match up with Strava. Strava and Garmin are similarly close. I don't know what I'm doing.

Anyway, I was only able to do five mile easy ride on rollers this morning. I had to stop because my hands were hurting and going numb. I was going to do a few more easy miles on rollers after work today, but decided to just take a break/rest.

Sunday, October 4, 2020

Week 39: Day 7 - 4 October 2020

  • morning ride = 58.73 miles; time = 4:58:41; average speed @ 11.8mph
  • walked dogs = 2.6 miles total
Running:
Total Weekly Mileage: 16.64
Total Monthly (September) Mileage: 78.84
Total Monthly (October) Mileage: 9.35
Total Yearly Mileage: 631.64
Total Shoe Mileage: 132.86

Cycling:
Total Weekly Mileage: 78.74
Total Monthly (September) Mileage: 188.19
Total Monthly (October) Mileage: 68.73
Total Yearly Mileage: 2320.05
Total Bike Mileage: 1685.89

I've finally recalculated my total bike mileage and total yearly cycling mileage. It took awhile to figure this out because the numbers from Garmin didn't match up with Strava (I generally don't like using Strava to keep track of mileage, however, both were close). I also need to do a better job at updating my blog so it's easier for me to keep track of mileage for both running/shoes and cycling/bike.

Anyway, I did a long ride that had 4,000 feet in total elevation. If you're an experienced cyclist, you will understand this. If you are not, let's just say that it was very hilly.

Saturday, October 3, 2020

Week 39: Day 6 - 03 October 2020

  • morning run = 5.89 miles; time =  1:26:26; average pace @ 14:40
  • walked dogs = 2.7 miles total
It amazes me how many people think that running and walking are the same. They are NOT. Because people ask me why I'm not with my dogs and they should be with me all the time (I'm very obviously running). These people should try running. If running was easy as walking, everyone would be doing it. I used to run with one dog (I have two), but stopped when I started running in the dark. Since I live in coyote territory and my dogs are small, I leave them at home while I go run around town in the dark so I don't have to worry about coyote attacks. I have enough problems with coyotes following me when I do walk my dogs with the sun out at 7am-8am.

  • walked dogs = 2.6 miles total
  • easy, recovery ride on rollers = 10.01 miles; time = 38:48; average speed @ 15.5mph
Tried to take it easy riding on rollers, but my legs felt fine. I guess I'll find out how sore my legs are when I do an easy run in the morning (running is a little harder than riding a bike on rollers).

Running:

Cycling:
Total Weekly Mileage: 54.74
Total Monthly Mileage: 177.18

Total Bike Mileage:

I have to recalculate my total yearly cycling mileage and bike mileage and which why both are left blank right now. There is a 100 mile difference between what I'm tracking here and what Garmin is keeping track of for the year and 45 mile difference on my bike. Garmin is mostly accurate, usually off by 1/8 or so mile. This is really bugging me that there is a huge difference. I know that part of this difference (on both) was not including my warm up rides when I first had my rollers and I'm sure some of it was not calculating correctly for whatever unknown reasons...which means that I have to go back to April. My running mileage has been fine though.

Anyway, I had wanted to ride up GMR (Glendora Mountain Road), starting from my house for a 42 mile roundtrip ride for awhile. I saw yesterday on strava that someone did a ride on GMR and GRR (Glendora Ridge Road) who said that both roads were closed to cars and the air quality was fine from the recent nearby fires. Both roads were not truly closed to ALL cars. There was a CHP officer on both sides, controlling who was able to drive on both roads. The roads were limited to residents only and I'm sure they were checking ID from everyone in cars. So while they only allowed residents in cars to drive on these roads, they allowed bikes and pedestrians up without checking ID. They didn't ask for my ID and I didn't/don't live in the city of Glendora (good thing they didn't because I forgot it at home). The person whose ride I saw Strava yesterday..also didn't live in Glendora and he was able to ride on both roads. When I saw the CHP at first, I somewhat rode towards his direction and he took the hint that I wanted to know if I could ride up to which he gave me the okay, so I had a field day. Then I saw five cars on GMR. Luckily, they were going the opposite direction because I would hate to hold up a car or two behind me for riding so slow. So on my way out to go home, I asked the CHP (different one from earlier) about road closures for next weekend. He said as of now, only residents allowed up. To find out if the road is closed or open to ALL cars, I have to go online and visit CalTrans or CHP websites.

Week 38: Day 6 - 26 September 2020

  • morning run = 5.13 miles; time = 1:11:54; average pace @ 14:01
  • walked dogs = 2.6 miles total
  • indoor ride - roller training = 11 miles; time = 38:52; average speed @ 17mph
I finally got my bike back from Jax today. It had already been ready for pickup since Tuesday morning, but of course, I couldn't pick up before today. They are closed on Sundays and Mondays and their store hours are 11am to 5pm Tuesday to Saturday. I'm at work from 9am to 5:30pm during the week, so Saturdays are the only days that I can pick up or drop off my bike for any service work and I have to wait a week to pick it up after dropping off. My bike needed a six month basic tune up work done as well as getting a new chain, cables + housing (so the brakes can work from the handlebars), new brake pads, and new bar tape. The bar tape that I had on there was starting to somewhat unwrap itself from the handlebars. They also said that since the cables needed to be replaced, the bar tape wouldn't be able to stick anymore after being unwrapped. I got a different color bar tape (black with blue dots). As much as I wanted light blue bar tape to match some of the light blue color on the bike frame, it is hard to clean and it gets dirty very easily. The dirt doesn't show in photos, but it's easy to see in person. Anyway, I get to take my bike out for a road ride tomorrow to test out the new parts.

  •  morning run = 4.25 miles; time = 1:01:19; average pace @ 14:26
  • walked dogs = 2.6 miles total
I did a run on Friday and Saturday (had been lazy to update). I was going to do a run yesterday (Sunday), but got lazy. I didn't do a ride all of last week out of laziness. I took my bike to a local bike shop on Saturday for a six-month tune-up (my bike needed a new chain and new cables for the brakes as well as basic tune-up in general). Saturdays were (are) their busiest days of the week because most people work during the week. They are closed on Sundays and Mondays, so unfortunately, I didn't get my bike back and of course, I didn't do a ride yesterday. Saturdays are the only days that I can drop off and pick up my bike. During the week, I'm at work from 9am to 5:30pm...their store hours are 11am to 5pm. So I'm without a bike until Saturday (seven days).

Tuesday, September 15, 2020

Week 37: Day 2 - 15 September 2020

  •  morning run = 3.47 miles; time = 50:59; average pace @ 14:43
  • walked dogs = 2.7 miles total

I did a hilly 46 mile ride two weekends ago and I was sore for two days. I did an easy recovery ride on Monday and an easy recovery run on Tuesday. I was dying during my run on Tuesday. Took a rest day after doing an 82.4 mile ride during the weekend. Walked my dogs and went to work yesterday. Good thing work had been chill with lots of sitting lately (I'm usually standing a lot). Still a little sore this morning, but I didn't die (or cry) during my run this time.

Cycling:
Total Weekly Mileage: 108.44
Total Monthly Mileage: 119.44
Total Yearly Mileage: 2153.42
Total Bike Mileage: 1716.01 (I think I need to go back to my rides on my blog and recalculate my bike mileage...when I have more time and energy. There is a 75 mile difference between here and Garmin)

Did my longest ride to-date today. I started in Corona and head to Crema Cafe in Seal Beach. I took the Santa Ana River Trail for the majority of the ride...heading towards Crema was unusually hard for me because I had headwind the whole way. Good thing I had trailwind going back, although I don't think it helped any because I was already sore and slowly dying when I was heading back.

I already had an idea how long the ride would be. I wanted to do a ride to Crema, but I could never do a group ride with my friends because I couldn't keep up at their speed. Although I should ride with them and try....just not on a longer ride.

In June, I ordered a new pair of shoes (Asics), so I could alternate between that pair and an older pair (Saucony) until the older pair reached 300 miles (or more) while I was training for the Long Beach half marathon. When I found out that the event was canceled, I stopped running in the new pair of shoes and kept running in the older pair until I felt it was time. The pair has reached 350 miles now and my feet are starting to get a little achy wearing/running in them. I can now safely assume that it's time to retire these shoes and start running in my new shoes again. Running shoes are good for 300-500 miles (I have run in a pair of shoes and my feet started aching in them when it finally reached 500 miles). I think I can assume that I won't need new shoes until next year. It took six months for my Saucony shoes to finally retire.

Week 36: Day 5 - 11 September 2020

  •  morning run = 5.58 miles; time = 1:19:24; average pace @ 14:14
    • warm-up on rollers = 2 miles; time = 9:29; average speed @ 12.7mph
  • walked dogs = 2.6 miles total
I got an email today that the Firecracker Run/Bike events for 2021 had become a virtual event where participation could be done anytime between December 1 2020 and March 07, 2021 (there will be no live events where people "get together" and run or ride bikes together). I am disappointed by this because I really am not interested in doing virtual events. If I'm going to pay for a bib, a shirt and a finisher's medal, I want to be surrounded by a bunch of people. I sign up for these things (one to two 10k and one half marathon a year) so I can feed off of other people's energy and I won't get bored of running alone for the rest of the year. I started doing the Firecracker 10k Run in 2009, 2011, and every year starting in 2013 (I missed out on 2010 and 2012 and I can't tell you why). I started doing the Firecracker 20 mile ride every year starting in 2015. I didn't do the bike last year and did the 40 mile this year.

When I got an email about the Long Beach Marathon being canceled (it was supposed to have been in three weeks), the email said that I could defer to next year, do a virtual event or transfer to another event. The other events that I could remember was the Santa Barbara Marathon (November 2020 most likely will be canceled) or the Surf City (Huntington Beach) Marathon in Feburary 07. I didn't think that the Surf City Marathon would be canceled - I have done this event before...I just don't want to do it this time around - but I think it will get canceled if the Firecracker run/ride did (the Firecracker run/ride is usually after the Surf City marathon).

Week 36: Day 3 - 09 September 2020

  • indoor ride - roller training = 10 miles; time = 39:06; average speed @ 15.3mph
  • walked dogs = 2.7 miles total
I come to realize that I like to do the bulk of my exercise in the morning before work and then wind down for the evening after work. While I have done exercises in the evening after work, I just feel better doing them in the mornings to basically help me wake up for the day and take my time to go to sleep or prepare for the next day. Not that it bothered me to work out or bike after work....

  • walked dogs = 2.7 miles total
  • indoor ride - roller training = 10 miles; time 39:48; average speed @ 15.1mph
Today was a holiday and I didn't have to work, so I was able to get an indoor ride during the day instead of waiting until after 5:30pm. It was still too hot to do a ride outdoors. It didn't feel humid during my run at 4:30am or walking my dogs (after my run) this morning, but it was humid enough that I was sweating a lot.

My last ride was Monday morning (on rollers). I washed my bike after work on Monday. I finally remembered to put on my speed and cadence sensors on my bike on Wednesday. I had every intentions to ride on Thursday, but laziness kicked in.

I didn't really beat the heat by running at 4:30am this morning. It was 87 degrees and really humid at that time.

I was going to do a ride yesterday morning, but laziness kicked in because I didn't want to ride in the very warm weather. If I had someone to ride with, I would have sucked it up and went for a ride. I took my bike into a local bike shop because it was time for a six-month tune-up. I thought I would have to leave it there and wait two to three weeks before pick up. Luckily, they let me make an "appointment" where I can go back in two weeks (they can work on my bike within the same day and have it ready to pick up before closing for the day), so I can ride in the meantime. I can only go in on Saturdays (their store hours are from 11am to 5pm Tuesday to Saturday...I'm at work from 9am to 5:30pm Monday to Friday) and I had to order bar tape (the tape that goes around the handlebars....mainly for cushion and partly for "fashion"/looks). They had to order it online for me and they can't get it for two weeks which is why my "appointment" is in two weeks.

I guess it takes me two days to "recover" and stop being sore. Felt better this morning.

  •  morning run = 4.25 miles; time = 1:09:05; average pace @ 16:16

  • easy, recovery ride on rollers = 10 miles; time = 44:02; average speed @ 13.6mph

Maybe a little too fast for an easy recovery ride? Feeling a little sore, but felt good riding on rollers.

Running solo is no big deal for me. I have been doing this for many, many years. I had been riding solo since quarantine started in March and I finally got to ride with someone today after five (almost six) months! While I do miss doing group rides and I'm awfully bored riding solo, I'm still reluctant to do group rides. Some people are disappointed with me because I haven't been doing group rides with them (I see pictures and there are 20 people riding together) until COVID is leveled out. I don't want to take the chance of doing group rides with that many people (I'll do rides with 1-2 other people once in awhile).

  •  morning run = 4.54 miles; time = 1:10:35; average pace @ 15:34
  • walked dogs = 2.6 miles total
I've finally caught up on sleep and can now go back to my regularly scheduled exercise program. Okay, it was more of out laziness. I walked my dogs on Monday and yesterday (Friday). Took my dogs out for a potty for the other weekdays, but didn't walk them. Didn't do any other exercise during the week. Today was the first actual exercise since last Sunday. Now to find the motivation and get back to yoga during the week. Doing yoga on the weekend is doable, but during the week is a different challenge. We'll see what kind of motivation I can find during the week.

So sore from yesterday's ride. I did a warm up ride on rollers before my run. I couldn't hold my own balance and used the wall for assistance during the whole warm up. I was determined to do a warm up before my run. I'm already slow at running, but I was slower this morning from being sore.

Saturday, August 22, 2020

Week 34: Day 6 - 22 August 2020

  •  morning ride = 72.05 miles; time = 4:32:24; average speed @ 15.9mph
  • walked dogs = 2.6 miles total
Two miles of the ride was on a bike trainer when I was at my follow-up appointment with my bike fit guy. I had breakfast during the first half of my ride, but didn't eat anything during the second half so I started dying in the last five miles of the ride.

I got a new car two weeks ago. At that time, I figured out that the back seat could fold down. The trunk looked big, so I knew that my bike could fit inside. I drove to the Yorba Linda Regional Park with my bike in the trunk today for the first time. Taking my bike out was the easy part. After a few tries, I will figure out how to put my bike in without struggling. Someone suggested that I took off the front bike tire, but I don't really like that idea. I tried this before with a different bike and a different car. It was too much work and time-consuming - like taking the tire off...put the bike in the car. Drive to destination/location to start bike ride. Take bike out of car and put tire back on bike. Repeat after the ride is over. It may be easier to put my bike in the car, but it's just too much work for me to take off the tire and then put it back on when I get to the ride starting location and then repeat after the ride is over. Anyway..now I don't have to worry about someone stealing my bike off of my bike rack or losing it on the freeway from not securing it properly to my bike rack (as long as someone doesn't steal my car to take to a chop shop and then take my bike to a pawn shop).

Week 34: Day 5 - 21 August 2020

  •  morning run = 3.53 miles; time = 53:45; average pace @ 15:15
    • warm up = 2 miles; time = 9:31; average speed @ 12.6mph
  • walked dogs = 2.6 miles total
Felt a little sore this morning. Don't feel so sore after my run anymore though.

Thursday, August 20, 2020

Week 34: Day 4 - 20 August 2020

  • walked dogs = 2.6 miles total
  • indoor ride - roller training = 6 miles; time = 20:17; average speed @ 17.7mph
    • warm up = 3 miles; time = 11:59; average speed @ 15mph
Eventually, I want to do speedwork with my bike on rollers. So I tried to ride in a harder gear and get used to it. 80 rpm (cadence) is supposed to be easy/warm-up/cool-down, but 80 rpm is hard for me to maintain at a harder gear. So I have to get used to 80rpm in all the hard gears first before I do any speed work.

Week 34: Day 3 - 19 August 2020

  •  morning run = 4.75 miles; time = 1:13:11; average pace @ 15:25

    • warm up on rollers = 3 miles; time = 14:08; average speed @ 12.7mph
  • walked dogs = 2.6 miles total
I haven't done any rides or warm up on rollers in three weeks and yesterday was the first time since. It's nice to finally ride on rollers.

Week 34: Day 1 - 17 August 2020

  •  indoor ride - roller training = 10 miles; time = 40:00; average speed @ 15mph

I haven't been updating very much......been lazy (not with the exercise) and I have to stop this laziness.

    • ride home = 2.94 miles; time = 13:25; average speed @ 13.1mph
I forgot to inflate my bike tires. My legs felt sore and the resistance felt hard riding on rollers. This usually happens when I don't inflate my tires (inflating to the proper PSI seems to help riding on rollers so much easier). I used the wall to hold my balance the whole time because I was too lazy to inflate my tires and hold my balance. But I wanted to get in some kind of work out.

Monday, August 3, 2020

Week 32: Day 1 - 03 August 2020

  • morning run = 3.06 miles; time = 46:54; average pace @ 15:18
  • walked dogs = 2.6 miles total
I got an email today that the Long Beach event (half/full marathons, 5k and bike tour) had been canceled. Anyone who registered/paid can do the virtual run (not interested), transfer the funs to another event (not interested) or defer for next year. I chose to defer for next year. I'm relieved by this on so many levels. Since I didn't want to ride with a group of my friends, it was harder for me to want to run a half marathon surrounded by a bunch of strangers. I can take a break and stop training until next year.

Had this whole discussion with me, myself, and I about whether or not I wanted to ride today. The lazy side of me wanted to stay in, sleep more and because my legs were sore. Finally found some motivation to ride, albeit a little late...I got dressed/ready and got on my bike at 8:15am. It was very warm today. Luckily, the weather actually wasn't that bad in general. It did get hot and uncomfortable at some point, but only a small part of it. Most of the ride felt fine, even during the second half of my ride when it got to around 90 degrees. Also, my legs decided not to be sore today. I thought I would have a terrible time during my ride with all the hills that I had to do.

I recently got a new pair of bike shoes, thinking that having more room in the toe box (because my toes on my left foot would get painful during rides) would help. I wore them for the first time last weekend, but my left foot still hurt. Thought that putting insoles from my other shoes (even though they're a bit smaller) would help and I'm still getting some left foot issues. I scheduled a follow-up appointment with my bike fit guy in three weeks. At this point, I can't really tell you why my left foot is acting up the way that it is.

Week 31: Day 6 - 01 August 2020

  • morning run = 8.20 miles; time = 2:02:03; average pace @ 14:53
  • walked dogs = 2.6 miles total
Tried to do a warm up ride on rollers this morning before my run, but I fell off after a few seconds. I gave up and didn't try again. I don't know why my legs are sore. All the hills that are small and normally easy to me felt harder than normal. I was fine after doing an eight mile run Saturday last weekend. I was sore from riding on Sunday, but didn't feel it until Monday. Monday was rest day. All of my rides to work/mechanic/home this week were short and flat. I did three runs this week instead of the normal four runs/days out of laziness. I've become grumpy. I'm not even sure if I will do a ride tomorrow.

My legs are feeling a bit sore for whatever reason like I'm doing too much. My rides to work/home are very short and flat. My runs are long-ish, but not that bad.

I took my car to my mechanic yesterday for an oil change and a check engine light. When he called me later in the day (I was at work), he said that to fix whatever problem my car was having, would be $3k to $4. He didn't know the value of my car (it is a 15 years old...I had it for 14 years), but he thinks that the cost of repairs is more than the value of my car. (I went to work on my bike after dropping my car off because my mechanic wasn't that far from work...work was 5.6 miles from my mechanic...I live four miles from my mechanic and three miles from work...) He did the oil change, but took the car back with the problems (he said that I shouldn't drive it anymore as he considered it unsafe). When I showed up to work on my bike yesterday, my co-workers were freaking out. I thought their reaction was funny because they knew that I had a bike...they've seen me show up on my bike before (twice) and they've seen me show up with my bike in tow with my car (for an evening ride after work).

So I guess I will be riding my bike to work until I figure out my car situation.

While my Garmin Vivosport (watch which is used to record my runs/hikes/walks) recharges fine, my computer can't recognize it when it's connected to my computer. So, I can't transfer my runs to Strava like I can with my rides (I use Garmin Edge 130 bike computer to record my rides). So I have to wait for Garmin to restore services before I can transfer my runs to Strava. I was going to wait for Garmin to restore services before transferring my rides to Strava, but I wanted to know how many PRs I got from riding today.

Week 30: Day 6 - 25 July 2020

  • long run = 8.05 miles; time = 1:58:17; average pace @ 14:41
    • warm up on rollers = 3 miles; time = 13:20; average speed @ 13.5mph
  • walked dogs = 2.6 miles total
I'm finally able to ride my bike on rollers with a wall on one side and NOTHING on the other side and I haven't fallen off yet, although I've only done that with two rides (3 miles each). I haven't taken any photos or videos yet since both rides were in the dark because I had the rollers/bike set up in the backyard and I did a warm up on them before my runs...my runs generally start in the dark. I thought setting my bike and rollers outside would be better than indoors and thought that I wouldn't need any fans blowing at me for "fake" wind'. When I did warm up rides before my runs last week and earlier this week, I would finish my warmup really hot and sweaty, and then become very cold when I stepped outside to start running. I still need fans regardless of where the set up is because I am basically stationary. When I'm actually going somewhere, there is always a slight wind from actually moving forward. Although the temperature change isn't that drastic from when I finish my warm up and then start my run.

I use a Garmin Edge "computer" for my bike rides and a Garmin vivosport watch for my runs/hikes/walks. Garmin had been having issues since yesterday. I don't know what is actually happening, but they are "experiencing an outage". What does this mean? They got hacked?

If you know anything about strava (phone fitness app), you know that there are "segments" where you can PR (personal records or personal best) or "beat" other people whether you know those people or not. On one segment, I have a crown for being first place because I beat out a bunch of other people who did the same one. I received this crown in October, but I was sharing it with someone because we tied for the same time. Then I PR'd again in December on the same segment, so I didn't have to share my crown with anyone. Then on the same segment, I PR'd again today. After so many adjustments made for my left foot problem with my bike fit guy (unfortunately, I have to go back for another followup), I finally PR'd after many attempts because I wanted to keep on trying to PR.

    • warm up on rollers = 3 miles; time = 13:08; average speed @ 13.7mph

I was going to do a "regular" ride on rollers after work, but too tired.

Monday, July 13, 2020

Week 29: Day 1 - 13 July 2020

  • indoor ride - roller training = 10 miles; time = 39:52; average speed @ 15.1mph
  • walked dogs = 2.7 miles total
Did better riding on rollers this morning. At mile 3.1/2 miles, I lost my balance and almost fell off, but caught myself. I would have completely stopped and finished my ride if I did fall off.

Week 28: Day 7 - 12 July 2020

  • walked dogs = 2.6 miles total
  • indoor ride - roller training = 3.27 miles; time =13:28; average speed @ 14.6mph
    • warm up = 3 miles; time = 12:16

I originally had planned to head out for a ride at 6am, but after I got all dressed up and ready, I fell back to sleep. Since it was too hot to ride later in the day, I did a ride on my rollers instead. Did a warm up followed by a "regular" ride, but had to cut it short before making myself more frustrated. I had my bike and rollers set up in the hallway, near the doorway. My left foot kept getting caught in the doorway, causing me to lose my balance. I moved my rollers and bike a little farther away from the wall and the doorway and a little more forward so I'd be more centered in the doorway for my next ride tomorrow.

Week 28: Day 6 - 11 July 2020

  • morning run = 6.7 miles; time = 1:24:27; average pace @ 14:05
    • warmup on rollers = 3 miles; time = 13:30; average speed @ 13.3mph
  • walked dogs = 2.6 miles total
A few weeks ago, I signed up for "Run With The Dark Side: We Have Coffee" virtual 10k Run. I received the bib, medal and shirt in the mail earlier this week. I wore the shirt and bib today. First, last and only virtual run I will ever do in my life. I signed up and paid for this because I wanted the shirt.

Week 28: Day 5 - 10 July 2020

  • morning run = 5.59 miles; time = 1:15:38; average pace @ 13:32
    • warmup on rollers = 3 miles; time = 12:58; average speed @ 13.9mph
  • walked dogs = 2.6 miles total
  • indoor ride - roller training = 8 miles; time = 30:33; average speed @ 15.7mph
There are a bunch of reasons why I have rollers...so I can do a warm-up on them before my runs. In general, I'm extremely lazy doing a warm-up before a run because I don't like doing it even though I know that it's important and I should do it. I also need another way to wake up during the 30 minutes before I head out for a run. I get dressed and then I always want to go back to sleep.

Week 28: Day 4 - 09 July 2020

  • morning run = 3.03 miles; time = 44:27; average speed @ 14:36
  • walked dogs = 2.6 miles total
  • indoor ride - roller training = 7 miles; time = 28:26; average speed @ 14.8 mph
Finally found some motivation to do a short ride on my rollers after work today. Now let's try to do this again tomorrow.

Week 28: Day 3 - 08 July 2020

  • morning run = 4.55 miles; time = 1:04:21; average pace @ 14:09
  • walked dogs = 2.6 miles total
Since I'm back to working full time hours (9am to 5:30pm...it was until 4pm as of last week), I'm having an awful time finding the motivation to do short bike rides (30-ish minutes) on my rollers after work.

My ride from today was supposed to be closer to 71 miles. The extra three miles were from being on a trainer during my follow-up appointment with my bike fit guy. Since my bike needed to come with me for my appointment, I decided to ride in....basically, hitting two birds in one stone (get a ride/work out in and see my bike fit guy for an appointment). He took pictures of both sides of my body on my bike. He determined that my left foot was a little bit too far back in relation to my knee which was the cause of the pain in my left foot. Basically, my left foot was overcompensating and working harder than my right foot. The position of my right foot was fine. So he adjusted my seat so my left foot was more forward without compromising the position of my right foot. I think I may need to go back for another follow-up appointment because I had a little bit of foot pain on the ride back after the appointment, but I think I will do another road ride first? I don't know why the left side of my body is so different than my right side and giving me so much trouble/grief.

Week 27: Day 5 - 03 July 2020

  • hilly morning run = 3.46 miles; time = 53:17; average pace @ 15:22
  • walked dogs = 2.7 miles total
  • indoor ride - roller training = 7 miles; time = 23:48; average speed @ 17.6mph
    • warmup ride on rollers = 3 miles; time = 12:59; average speed @ 13.9mph
It was too hot outside so I did a ride on my rollers. I will be doing an outdoor ride on Sunday. I have a followup appointment with my bike fit guy and my bike needs to come with me anyway, so I plan to ride in to get in a work out ride. 70 miles round trip.

Thursday, July 2, 2020

Week 27: Day 4 - 02 July 2020

  • walked dogs = 2.6 miles total
  • easy recovery ride on rollers = 5 miles; time = 21:43; average speed @ 13.8mph
  • yoga = 1 hour
I have tomorrow off from work, so I plan to do a hilly run (3.9 miles) and an outdoor road ride. Starting on Monday next week, I go back to working full time 9am-5:30pm Monday-Friday, so I have to prioritize my workouts so I'm not spending more than an hour on an exercise after work because I'd like to be done by 7pm to start winding down for bed.

Wednesday, July 1, 2020

Week 27: Day 3 - 01 July 2020

  • walked dogs = 2.6 miles total
  • yoga = 1 hour
    • pre-yoga warm up on rollers = 3 miles; time = 14:18; average speed @ 12.6mph
Feeling a little sore this morning from using a harder gear riding on rollers yesterday.

Week 27: Day 2 - 30 June 2020

  • morning run = 5.04 miles; time = 1:0811; average pace @ 13:33
  • indoor ride - roller training = 5 miles; time = 18:49; average speed @ 16 mph
    • warm up ride on rollers = 3 miles; time = 14:04; average speed @ 12.8mph
So it has begun. The Long Beach Half Marathon is on Sunday, 04 October and I start training this week. Today was the first run for training. I also bought a new pair of shoes (today being the first run). I still have my old shoes, but using those strictly for long runs until they reach 300 miles. Right now, I'm assuming that the event is still happening, however, I'm slowly losing hope.

  • morning run = 5.53 miles; time = 1:19:02; average pace @ 14:19
  • walked dogs = 2.6 miles total
  • yoga = 1 hour
I was going to do a ride after my run, but it's so hot and the weather is making me extra tired/sleepy.

Thursday, June 25, 2020

Week 26: Day 4 - 25 June 2020

  • walked dogs = 2.6 miles total
  • indoor ride = roller training = 6 miles; time = 22:23; average speed @ 16.1mph
    • warm up = 2 miles; time = 9 minutes; average speed @ 13.3mph
  • yoga = 50 minutes
Felt so much better riding on rollers with properly inflated tires. My stamina doesn't suck after all.

Wednesday, June 24, 2020

Week 26: Day 3 - 24 June 2020

  • morning run = 4.22 miles; time = 1:04:44; average pace @ 15:21
  • walked dogs = 2.7 miles total
  • indoor ride - roller training = 3 miles; time = 12:52; average speed @14 mph
    • warm-up on rollers = 3 miles; time = 14:51; average speed @ 12.2mph
I realized that I need to properly inflate my back tire which is causing me to feel tired and my stamina is not that good. I can do better than 14mph, but inflated my tire with a hand pump. Will use a floor pump to inflat my tire better so I can do better tomorrow for another indoor ride on rollers.

Tuesday, June 23, 2020

Week 26: Day 2 - 23 June 2020

  • walked dogs = 2.6 miles total
  • indoor ride = roller training = 5 miles; time 24:27, average speed @ 12.3 mph
  • yoga = 1 hour
I haven't done any rides on my rollers in three weeks. My stamina isn't as good it was before. I'd imagine that it'll come back easily after a few tries.

I felt a little sore this morning. I'm surprised by this because my ride from yesterday was not particularly long and definitely not particularly challenging in hills. I think I need to ride outdoors more often so I don't get sore on the day after an outdoor ride.

Saturday, June 20, 2020

Week 25: Day 6 - 20 June 2020

  • lunch ride = 42.04 miles; time = 3:11:24; average speed @ 13.2 mph
  • walked dogs = 2.7 miles total
My ride felt much better and nicer this morning. When I fell off riding on rollers three weeks ago, I fell on the right side where all the gears, chain, and derailleur were on. The derailleur was pushed in a little so the chain was acting weird on the cassette and would make jerking movements in certain gears. I didn't ride on my rollers for three weeks because I didn't feel safe with all the jerking movements. I learned to just deal with the jerking movements during road rides because I could balance better outdoors. I mentioned this to the service guys who basically straightened out the derailleur so there isn't any more jerking movements. My bike needed a general basic tune up and they also fixed the tension on my chain since I had been doing a lot of hilly rides. I'd imagine that I would need to get a new chain at the next tune-up service. I'll be riding on rollers soon. I also got new bar tape, so I could have more color on my bike.

Hadn't done a ride since last weekend. I dropped off my bike at the bike shop yesterday for a basic tune-up and picked it up today (after work). Can't wait to ride it tomorrow.

Still felt sore this morning and I was asking myself why I was out running with sore legs. I actually felt better and less sore during the second half of my run.

Felt sore this morning. Yesterday, someone sent me an email, inviting me to do a ride that would have been this morning. I thanked her for inviting me, but I had to pass. I couldn't handle more rides after doing a 70 mile ride unless they were very short and slow (like beginner's pace).

Saturday, June 13, 2020

Week 24: Day 6 - 13 June 2020

  • morning ride = 71:30 miles; time = 4:24:23; average speed @ 16.2mph
  • walked dogs = 2.7 miles total
I had a follow-up appointment this morning with my bike fit guy in Long Beach. Since my bike needed to come with me, I decided to go for a ride and started from the Yorba Linda Regional Park to Long Beach. About .14 (point fourteen) mile is on the trainer at the appointment and I don't feel like substracting it from my ride since I forgot to remember how long I was on the trainer (my Garmin was still recording). My fit guy and I came to the conclusion that my left foot had a slightly higher arch than my right foot (the arch in my right foot is normal). The insoles that I got for my bike shoes were customizable according to the person's arches (the insoles are "heated up" and there are these little molds things that go under the insoles and the person stands on the insoles so that the insoles can mold to the person's arches). He asked me to email him after my ride back to my car (to which I did) how my foot felt whether it was good or bad. My left foot is still hurting during rides, but it didn't start to hurt until the last 10-12 miles of my ride when I was almost back to my car. He said he would need to special order certain insoles just for my left foot. When I had a follow-up appointment with him two weeks ago, riding in was fine. My left foot started to hurt when I was ten miles away from my fit guy and then again during the last 10-12 miles of my ride. I didn't turn around and go back to my fit guy when I was ten miles away because that would mean adding another 20 miles to my ride and I didn't think my legs could handle a 90-mile ride. Trying to finish 70 miles that day was a struggle (I was dying during the last 10-12 miles with muscle fatigue, soreness, and less energy).

I was watching the Global Cycling Network on youtube about doing century (100 miles) rides. If you could do a 70-75 mile ride and felt fine, you would do fine on a century ride. I felt better doing a 70 mile ride for the second time compared to the first time. I was 35 minutes faster the second time.

After my appointment on my way back to my car, I finally visited the "famous" Sancho's Tacos in Huntington Beach that was always in my bike friends' photos from their rides. I wished I could have tried something from their lunch menu, but I got there during breakfast hours and they wouldn't let me order from the lunch menu.

Week 24: Day 4 - 11 June 2020

  • morning run = 4.2 miles; time = 1:00:18; average pace @  14:13

Is summer over yet?

Wednesday, June 10, 2020

Week 24: Day 3 - 10 June 2020

  • morning run = 4.2 miles; time = 1:04:21; average pace @ 15:21
  • walked dogs = 2.6 miles total
Really struggled to run in humid 65 degrees weather this morning at 5am. I'm now asking what I've gotten myself into and why I'm training for a half marathon in the middle of summer. Right now, I'm regretting my decision, but I think I'll be fine once the event is finally here.

Tuesday, June 9, 2020

Week 24: Day 2 - 09 June 2020

  • morning run = 4.23 miles; time = 59:04; average pace @ 13:58
  • walked dogs = 2.5 miles total
A few months ago, I signed up for the Long Beach Half Marathon (to be held on Sunday, 04 October). I was checking the website yesterday for charities that I could set up a fundraiser, so I could collect donations during my training (none are available right now). I originally thought that the event was on Sunday, 11 October. It had always been on the second weekend in October every year before, so I don't know why it's on the first weekend of October this year. I did this event a few times before and I usually started training during the first full week in July, but I have to start training at the end of June/beginning of July this year which is in three weeks from now.  In three weeks for the next three months, I have to stop being lazy with my running. This means that I have to become an old person who is in bed by 8pm so I can run at 4:30am/5am on weekdays (I still have to shower, walk my dogs and be at work by 9am during the week)

Also this summer, I am training for the "Finish The Ride" (50 miles) to be held on Sunday, 20 September. If you're not a cyclist, you may not understand this. The ride has a 3,500 feet total in elevation which is considered "hilly" and challenging. I think I'm ready for it as I did a 54.75-mile ride with a 3,600 feet total in elevation. I am still going to train this summer anyway. I'm trying to get some "big" rides together with some friends...either long rides or rides that are hilly and challenging.

I'm going to have a very busy summer.

I'd like to point out that if you are going somewhere in a car, give yourself plenty of time to get to your destination and take your time so you can pay attention to your surroundings better. I was in a left turn lane and I had the right of way because I had the turn signal. Someone (opposite direction) had a red light and was making a right turn. She didn't see me at all because I was behind a car. But she also didn't wait at the red light long enough either. Instead of waiting a little bit after the car in front of me finished making a left turn, she proceeded to make her right turn immediately, basically cutting me off because I needed to be in the right lane after my left turn. She didn't even react to all the screaming and yelling that I did.
