I did a very short warmup ride on rollers. I couldn't make it to two or three miles. The noise level was terrible. No one has complained about the noise level, but I worry that someone will eventually and it bothers me. It was "quiet" or silent when it was new, but the noise level was low and wouldn't bother anyone. The ride was also super bumpy. I don't know what to do with the rollers. I don't want to ride on them anymore.

So it begins. Training starts this week for the Long Beach Half Marathon in October. It will be a very long three months of training.
The last half marathon that I did was February 2018 when I had a different job and different work schedule. I would wake up and go for a run whenever the sun came up...so like 5am because it was summer and 7am because it was winter. I had my current job (that starts at 9am daily Monday to Friday) for two and a half years now. So I had been running at 4:30-5am all year round during these two and a half years. So it will also be very interesting to train for a half marathon with my current work schedule.

I'm not scheduled to work today as part of the long holiday weekend. I had a lot of trouble figuring out what I wanted to do for my day off...whether to do a hike, an easy recovery run or easy recovery ride. Or just take a rest day with the exception of walking the dogs and doing some yoga. I ended up doing a rest day.

Unsurprisingly, felt sore this morning with heavy legs. I'm now trying to get into yoga/stretching regularly as I'm a high intensity athlete. Also....mainly because I start training next week for a half marathon in October.

I did a long and very hilly ride today. And it was hot because it's summer. I started my ride at 5:30am and I didn't get home until 2pm. I didn't walk my dogs today because it was hot when I got home and even at 7pm, it's still very warm. I feel kinda crummy making my dogs walk in 85 degrees weather.
I was originally going to do the ride tomorrow, but a friend had to cancel and I have a pool party to attend in the afternoon/evening anyway.

I'm not sure if I should be happy or disappointed that we're not getting "June Gloom" this month? Even though cloudy/overcast mornings make me lazy and want to sleep in, I told myself that overcast was better than warm and humid weather. On the other hand, I saw a nice sunset with some clouds this morning during my run.

My seat is tighten enough now that it get low during my rides...even though I was paranoid that it wasn't during the whole ride. I would got gone back to Jax and complained that they should not have adjusted my seat and they needed to fix the problem. I also had originally wanted to ride up my go-to hill. The hill is one mile from bottom to top. The first half is on a 14% grade while the second half was on a 9% grade. I got halfway through the 14% grade part (not even to the top of the 14% grade), took a rest break and decided that I didn't want to ride up the hill. So I walked my bike back down the hill and finished the ride on flat grounds. I had a hard time finding the motivation to ride up the hill.

I had my bike dropped at Jax for a tune up last weekend. I picked it up on Thursday evening. Did a ride on Friday, very early morning at 5am. Except for the part where my seat was adjusted too high because I don't know why they needed to adjust my seat for (they never did when they worked on my bike before, so I don't know why they did it this time) and never adjusted it back to where I needed it. They also unknowingly removed the sticker that my bike fit guy used to mark the seat post where the seat needed to be for proper height. I didn't know or realize right away that my seat was at the wrong height while I was at the store and noticed it on Friday morning for a ride....I was barely able to reach the pedals, but the reach felt like it was meant for a tall person with very long legs. Even though the sticker was removed and I still knew where my seat needed to be, I had limited lighting at 5am on Friday morning and couldn't see my seat post very well. But it took some effort to loosen the bolt thing on my seat post for an adjustment because they tightened it too tight. So my seat was a tad too low for my Friday morning ride, but it was tolerable for the ride that didn't have major hills. I readjusted my seat after the ride when I got home and had the sun out. But I didn't tighten the bolt thing on my seat post well enough so when I did a ride today, my seat started getting lower. I was on my go-to hill (first half had a 14% grade and second half had a 9% grade when I wanted to do something challenging and work on my climbing legs). The ride was fine for the first half of the hill with the 14% grade. After taking a break from that 14% grade, I got back on and started to ride when my back tire fishtailed. I got off my bike to check my bike tire because I thought it was low on air, but that was when I noticed my seat was low. I had a multi-tool to adjust my seat, but I left it at home. I debated walking back down the hill with the 14% grade (because I refuse to ride down a hill with that kind of steepness) or get back on my ride and finish the rest of the hill. My seat got worse and lower, so I just walked my bike to the top of the hill to avoid blowing out my knees on a hill with a low seat and "finish" the ride with more than three or four miles. I had originally planned to do a 40-something mile ride, but the ride was very hilly and I didn't want to blow out my knees. When I got home to readjust my seat again, I had lost all motivation to continue my ride.
Since I didn't get my ride, I went for a hike on a trail that I hadn't done in almost two years. It was very warm, but not humid today. I did this hike in warm, but not humid, weather before. At that time, I had gatorade and two liters of water. I also had my "life straw" (filtered water from creeks/streams/other natural bodies of water). I finished the gatorade, but didn't finish the water. so I didn't have to use my life straw even though there were water crossings. I had only two liters of water with me for the hike today. I finished the water, but didn't need to use the life straw out of curiosity. This was the third time where I did a hike that had water (streams/creeks/etc), but never used the life straw. I guess better to have it and not need it than not have it at all and act like I'm dying for having no water.

I'm without my bike for a few days as I've dropped off my bike at Jax yesterday morning for a tune up (there is some creaking sounds in the headset as they called it and the derailleur needed to be replaced) after a photography meet. If all goes well, I will get it back on Thursday before the weekend. Slowly but surely, they are extending their store hours, but they are open until 6pm on Thursday and Friday only while they are open until 5pm on Tuesday and Wednesday and closed on Sunday and Monday. The last time that I dropped off my bike at Jax, it was on a Saturday morning. It was ready for pick up on a Thursday, but I couldn't pick it up until the Saturday after. At the time, they closed at 5pm everyday that they were opened and I left work at 5:30pm during the week.

I started using a new pair of running shoes last week. The arch in my right foot is normal while the arch in my left foot is slightly higher than normal. While I have an insert in my left shoe, I was having some discomfort. When I did a run on Monday and yesterday, both of my feet felt discomfort. I was starting get worried that my feet didn't like the shoes even though I'm pretty good at picking out running shoes appropriately for my feet and running style. I finally got some compression socks in the mail and used a pair this morning. My feet felt pretty good. I'm determined to do a run tomorrow, but I'm not having fun running and need to back off. I was planning a ride on Friday morning, but I'm not sure if I will or take a rest day.

Time for me to get back into my blog since I started wearing new running shoes last week and I have to keep track of mileage. I start training next month for a half marathon to be held in October. Normally, I only use one pair of running shoes, but during training for three months, I have to alternate between two pairs of shoes as the current (new) shoes will not make it to the end of training if I strictly wear that pair only.

I'm finally learning and figuring out that as long as I rest properly at a food stop or at some point during a challenging (hilly or long) ride, I tend to do fine during the majority of the ride and I won't feel like I'm dying.

I was going to complain that my weather app was wrong about the 68% chance of rain during the 5 o'clock hour until it started to rain during the last mile. It started to downpour during the last 1/2 mile. I quite enjoyed the heavy downpour, however, this was probably because my run was almost over.

This was the second ride (first with the new bar tape) on rollers longer than three miles where my hands felt fine. Usually one or both of my hands would go number during most of my rides on rollers. It is probably too soon to say that the new bar tape is better, so I guess I'll find out after a few more rides. It is not more comfortable, but the texture is different than the bar tape that I had before.

First ride after getting my bike back. The ride felt great. Even though I have a brand new chain (it was put on my bike yesterday), I think I have to put lube/chain oil on it so other related parts connected to it can also be lubed up? It was a little squeaky when I dropped off my bike last weekend because I forgot to wash my bike and/or add extra lube.

Soo, my laptop decided to stop working a week and a half ago. It still doesn't turn on, so it's a mystery what happened to it and I had to get a new laptop. I've had a new laptop for a week now, but I just hadn't been posting while I had been working out. So I'm back to a regularly scheduled posting.
On Saturday, I dropped off my bike for a performance maintenance at a bike shop. I wasn't expecting to just dropping it off. I kinda got used to them looking over my bike briefly and then setting up an "appointment" and I could just drop off on the scheduled date...it would take them a day or two to work on my bike. As opposed to two weeks like it used to if I just dropped off my bike without an appointment. They said it would take 5 - 7 days before I could get my bike back which was fine because their store hours kinda suck anyway (Tuesday to Saturday, 11am to 5pm, closed Sunday/Monday) and I'm at work from 9am to 5:30pm during the week, so Saturdays are the only day I can drop off and pick up my bike from them. Normally, I would prefer to do some kind of cardio to start my day, but I'm trying out this whole yoga thing in the mornings for the meantime.

I think I found a temporary solution for my back issue anytime I ride more than three miles on rollers. I still think I should visit my chiropractor, but I picked up some Salon Pas cream which helped for now. Now to figure out the hand numbness when I ride on rollers. I don't know what to do about this. My bike fit guy said that a bike fitting only applied to riding outdoors (road, gravel or mountain trails) and wouldn't help much for riding on rollers.

I did the whole ride just fine on Sunday. I had no idea that my back tire had a slow leak until yesterday morning and it was flat. I didn't hear any air leaking, but I could see the gauge thing on my pump slowly moving to the left when I inflated the tire to the minimum PSI. I must have picked up a thorn during the ride and had no idea. (I checked the inside of the tire to find any thorns stuck to it, but none was found).

I think it's time to go back to my chiropractor soon. Normally, my back acts up on rides with a lot of climb (not all the time) and usually not during long, flat rides. My lower back started acting up around 20 miles into the ride. Then I had to stop every five miles or so on the way back to my car. I did a ride to Sanchos Tacos and made sure that I had a properly long rest while there. It helped a lot because my legs felt pretty good for the whole ride and didn't feel like dying.

I was doing yoga three to four times a week for two (maybe three) months last year when I had more time and more energy because I was forced to work part-time (global/covid pandemic reasons). Then my work went full time, so I gave up because I was more tired. I recently got a new Garmin fitness watch that includes a specific yoga feature, so I hope this will help me do yoga more regularly, but I think I will only do yoga on the weekends when I have more time and energy.

I recently purchased a new jump rope where I could adjust the length according to my height. The jump rope I had before, while made with very good material, wasn't. Also I jumped rope twice last year. Not because of the length, but the weather (too hot/warm) was a major excuse for not jumping rope. I'd like to try to make this into a habit? It takes 21 days to make something into a habit, but I'm not jumping rope for 21 consecutive days, so we'll see what happens after next week.

I've decided to sign up for the "Malibu To Tahoe" virtual challenge. There is the bike challenge, run/walk challenge and the bike/run challenge (people could choose either 350 miles or 700 miles). I wish they had a different mileage (higher) for the people who chose to bike/run because I can easily meet 700 miles in two months. I have six months to complete the challenge. I'm also raising funds to fight against hunger. Please consider making a donation. Any amount, small or big, is greatly appreciated!

I picked up a tube from Incycle during the week. I picked up two more (spares) from Jax today. Today called for rain so no outdoor rides, but tomorrow will be dry so I'll get to ride outdoors. I have two extra spares just in case I get two flats in the same ride (it has actually happened to me one time and a few of my friends, getting two flats in the same ride....it doesn't often happen to the same person, but better to be safe than getting stranded in the middle of nowhere.

My bike had a flat (back tire) this morning, so I didn't do a ride. I guess I could have just gone for a run instead, but I was making excuses (too windy) not to run. On the other hand, if I did go out for a run, I wouldn't have had the time to change the flat because I wouldn't have been motivated enough to ride in the evening. I inflated my tires and did my ride just fine yesterday. I must have messed up and bent the air valve yesterday somehow? At first, I thought I overinflated my tires even though I had been pretty good at making sure it was exactly at the minimum PSI. I had two extra spare tubes. I put in the first spare and I somehow bent the air valve in that too because the air leaked out of it right away. So I put in the second spare and it seemed okay. I came home from work and the back tire didn't feel like it had enough air (minimum PSI), but I ignored it anyway and thought it would be okay. I only managed to get 3.63 miles for the ride because it got hard to pedal. Basically, it already had a slow leak because I managed to bend the air valve from inflating it in the morning and my weight from sitting on my bike made it leak faster. So I have no extra spare tubes until I pick up spare tubes. I have two choices: go to Incycle tomorrow after work because they close later during the week and pay for a tube or wait until Saturday when Jax is open because their store hours suck (they open from 11am to 5pm daily and close on Sunday and Monday and I'm at work from 9am to 5:30pm during the week). In the meantime, I can't ride my bike.

My legs felt a little sore yesterday after the ride. My legs also felt sore during my warmup and run. I had to hold onto the wall during the whole warmup because my legs couldn't pedal fast enough to hold my balance, but I should also inflate my tires.

I did a ride up Mt Baldy, Glendora Ridge Road (GRR for short), and Glendora Mountain Road (GMR for short). Both GRR and GMR were closed this weekend for "critical fire weather" until Thursday, 20 January (the weather forecast calls for high wind advisory tomorrow and Tuesday). Luckily, the wind was okay today. I did this ride last month (or in November? I can't remember...I have to go back and view my rides to remember). Riding up Mt. Badly Road was harder this time around because I hadn't done any climbs with a 10+% grade since...November. So I think I lost some strength and power. On the other hand, I did much better riding up GRR (last time, I took many rest breaks on GRR) with four rest breaks - three being very short/brief, enough to take pictures and drink water because I made myself take a long rest break during a breakfast/food stop after riding up Mt. Baldy.

Had wanted to do a warmup ride (for my run) on rollers, but my speed and cadence sensors didn't connect with my Garmin bike computer. So much time was wasted resetting my Garmin (my sensors are connected now) that my motivation dwindled and I needed enough motivation for my run.

Took a rest day yesterday (walked the dogs and went to work) Felt sore while doing a warmup (ride) on rollers this morning. Felt stiff, but not sure during my run (usually it's the other way). This meant that I needed to inflate my bike tires to the minimum PSI. I didn't bother for my warmup this morning because it was two miles and I thought it would be okay.

Today was a "great" (read sarcasm) day a long ride! So windy, but only in one direction when I was heading out to Sanchos Tacos. I was originally thinking of going longer and doing a century (100) mile ride, but the wind zapped my energy when I got to Sanchos and I needed enough energy to get back to my car.
Since I don't need to see my bike fit guy anymore, I need another reason to do a metric ride.

I sat awkwardly at work after lunch yesterday. At the time, my knee felt fine until I had to get up to start cleaning at the end of the work shift. A co-worker noticed that I was walking with a limp because my right knee was hurting. I was considering not running this morning, but I figured if it was going to hurt while running, I would know right away and I would stop. Strangely, it felt fine until I decided to stop halfway and do a little stretching. Stretching was a very bad idea because it made my knee hurt and I struggled to finish my run. I walked my dogs and my knee actually felt fine. Note to self: sit normal at work.

I think I did too much during the weekend, especially yesterday. My legs were tired, but not sore after doing my recovery ride yesterday. They were sore this morning. I struggled to do a "pre-run" warmup on my rollers and leaned against the wall for the whole two miles. I also couldn't pedal faster. I also felt sore during my run. I was originally going to do a ride (ten miles) on my rollers tomorrow, but I think I'll just take a rest day instead.

My legs felt pretty good this morning during my warmup and run, however, they felt stiff and a bit tired during the recovery ride on rollers. It finally dawned on me five miles into the recovery ride that my legs felt like jello was from doing the six-mile run this morning. Also, I finally figured out how to fix the noise level on my rollers, but I guess I'll find out the real test during the week when my legs feel a little more refreshed and less tired. Basically, I rotated the rollers around. One of the screws/bolt was also very difficult to remove from one of the rollers. I had to use a degreaser to get the screw to come off. Also the roller that had the difficult screw had a crack. It doesn't affect the parts surrounding the roller as the parts are still intact. I'm not sure if any of these things had any effect on the noise level?

Some stats for December and the year 2020. Good riddance to 2020. Happy New Year and welcome 2021. Let's hope it's a good one!
I have to be better at updating my blog to keep track of mileage. I still need to go back to Garmin and Strava to determine the accurate total mileage for my bike, but at least it is only for the bike this time because I still have the same bike and it is the new month and new year so starting fresh.
This year, assuming that my events don't get canceled again, I will run 1,000 miles and ride 3500 miles...this will be my goal for the year. I am running the Long Beach half marathon and doing the "Finish The Ride" killer half-century this year. I was supposed to have done both last year, but Covid had other plans. Although both haven't officially announced the new set date for each event, I hope neither will get canceled.
